How does the treatment work?

Dermaroller therapy provides advanced micro-medical skin needling, a procedure that stimulates the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely, creating smoother, brighter, healthier and younger looking skin.

After a dermaroller procedure your body will start to naturally regenerate and repair the skin, working below the surface in the dermis. This takes time as new collagen is formed, new skin cells are generated and blood supply is enhanced.

It can take up to six weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing you with a natural and long lasting enhancement.

What does the treatment involve?

A topical anaesthetic cream will be applied to your skin prior to treatment which will numb the skin making the procedure comfortable. It normally takes up to 30 minutes for the anaesthetic to work and another 20-30 minutes for the Dermaroller treatment.

The process for Dermaroller procedure is exactly the same whether you are having treatment on your face or body. Your skin practitioner will use a small handheld medical roller with hundreds of micro-skin needles arranged around it, to produce thousands of micro-medical needle-columns in the skin. Each column will penetrate into the dermis of the skin and will be approximately 0.1mm in width. The column will close rapidly enabling the skin to recover quickly-often in the same day.

Immediately after your Dermaroller treatment you will look as though you have moderate sunburn and your skin may feel warm and tighter than usual. This will start to subside after 1 to 2 hours and will normally recover within the same day with only slight redness the following day.

Your Skin Practitioner will advise you on what to do following treatment. We advise that make up is not applied for 24 hours after the procedure and a strong UVA/UVB sunscreen is recommended following the treatment.

Following treatment your skin will appear more radiant and refreshed. It can take up to six weeks before visible signs of regeneration and repair are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing you with a natural and long lasting enhancement. The results from a dermaroller treatment are permanent. As it is a repair of the skin it does not revert after a given time period. Dermaroller for fine lines and wrinkles will improve the skin; however it will not stop skin ageing and new lines forming.

How does Dermaroller compare to fractional skin resurfacing?

The benefits of Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing are highly similar to that of Dermaroller however the non-ablative laser is more aggressive with a completely different mechanism. The laser beam sets a burn under the skin which, after an inflammatory process, becomes fibrotic in forms of micro scars. Nerve cells are also affected by the hot laser beam, which can be painful.

With Dermaroller the needle only penetrates through the epidermis, which is only cleft and will rapidly heal. As the skin swells, the holes are closed. The needle prick injures the upper 1 - 2 mm of the dermis; this minute injury causes some localised damage and bleeding which promotes normal post-traumatic infiltration of fibroblasts and the release of growth factors.

Ultimately, collagen is laid down in the papillary and upper reticular dermis. With thousands of pin pricks next to each other this process mimics the results obtained with a laser, but without destroying the epidermis.

Introduced by a German scientist in 2000, Dermaroller has been a strong competitor to Laser Skin Resurfacing for more than a decade now. Especially with fans such as Angelina Jolie coming out and describing their love for this wonder treatment, it’s not a surprise why people prefer this mechanical, no side effect, easy to use and cost effective product than Laser.
