How do dermal fillers reverse the signs of ageing?

As we get older, our face loses volume and that full-faced, youthful look gradually disappears. In its place we have skin that sags, cheeks that have lost definition, and hollows below the eyes, creating that ‘tired all the time’ look.

This is caused by the breakdown of collagen within our skin cells. As we age, our skin’s ability to produce collagen is diminished. This starts from the age of about 25, when the natural regenerative properties of the skin begin to reduce and collagen production slows down.

Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid in a very purified form. This is used to build collagen that is lost from the ageing skin restoring volume, lifting sagging skin and plumping out the folds.

Areas that can be treated include:

  • Laughter lines (smile lines)
  • Frown lines
  • Smoker’s lines (area above the upper lip)
  • Marionette lines (lines that run from the angle of the mouth to the chin)
  • Build volume in cheeks, chin, lips, nose
  • Augment jawline
  • Correct the hollowness around the eye area.

What are the benefits of dermal fillers?

Many people find themselves unhappy with the general volume in certain areas of their face, but do not necessarily like the idea of an invasive surgical procedure to rectify this.

During a traditional facelift, incisions are made around the periphery of the face. These tend to be located around the ear and the hairline. Through these incisions, excess tissue is removed and the remaining skin is then pulled tight and sutured. Facelift surgery will require a substantial recovery period, and because they are surgical techniques, come with potential risks and complications. Because of this, a non-surgical facelift is the preferred option for many people.

Dermal fillers are specially made anti-wrinkle solutions that are injected directly into the face. The injection site will then increase in volume, removing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. The result from the facial fillers will last several months, and repeat treatments can be performed as needed. Essentially, all that will be required of you when having lip fillers, under eye fillers or cheek fillers is to come to the clinic and relax during the treatment. The whole process should take no more than an hour. Once the treatment is performed, there is no downtime needed so people are free to return to work and to apply make-up on the area.

Men and women alike may be concerned with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on their faces and may invest in a number of beauty treatments or anti-wrinkle creams. The primary use for an anti-wrinkle cream is to prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the skin by keeping it hydrated. Some creams even claim to treat deep lines by the use of certain ingredients that either ‘plump’ the skin temporarily and cause the wrinkles to become less noticeable, or they contain other things that are scientifically proven to reduce their appearance. It is worth noting, however, that many of the results that can be obtained through these creams are either temporary or minimal at best. People who want to reduce their wrinkles in a more noticeable way should consider the use of anti-wrinkle injections.

Compared to other anti-ageing treatments, dermal fillers allow greater precision in wrinkle correction, and can more effectively treat medium to deep wrinkles. Dermal fillers are very different to Botox, or wrinkle relaxing treatments. Dermal fillers are most frequently used to ‘fill’ facial lines, wrinkles and folds (known as static wrinkles) or add volume deep into the skin to enhance facial contours (e.g. cheeks) and features such as the lips by providing more volume and definition. Wrinkle relaxing treatments use Botulinum Toxin to temporarily relax wrinkles that cause dynamic wrinkles which occur as a result of facial movement rather than loss of volume in the skin.

What are the different types of facial fillers?

Today there are many under eye, cheek and lip fillers on the market that are substandard. Here at the Ivy Medispa, we use only the highest quality brands of temporary fillers including Restylane, Juvaderm and Emervel, which are world-renowned for their superior results. These products are FDA approved and have the best safety profile of all the wrinkle fillers currently available. To date, Restylane fillers have been used in over 20 million treatments worldwide. These ranges of fillers contain a variety of products, which can be used to treat different areas, from fine lines on more delicate parts of the face to deep skin depressions.

What does the treatment involve?

The treatment of wrinkles with dermal filler will involve injecting the hyaluronic acid through a tiny needle. The discomfort is minimal as the treatment does not take long to perform. The aesthetic outcomes of treatments with dermal filler are seen immediately after the treatment. Treating wrinkles with dermal filler is fast, leaving no scars.

The benefits from dermal fillers can be seen almost immediately and the effects will last generally between 6 months to a year. These are non-permanent under eye, cheek and lip fillers that are broken down by the body over a period of time.
